Author Guidelines

Submission of Manuscripts

Adsorption Science & Technology publishes original research papers, correspondence, critical review articles and short notes for rapid publication either as Letters to the Editor or Short Communications. All such communications should be descriptions of high quality work that has not appeared in, nor is under consideration by, other journals.

Contributions are accepted on the understanding that the author(s) have obtained the necessary authority for publication. Submission of a manuscript is understood to imply that the article is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Accepted papers become the sole property of the journal and may not be published elsewhere, in whole or part, without the prior consent of the Publisher. Such permission may be obtained by writing to the Publisher (AST), Multi-Science Publishing Co., Ltd., 5 Wates Way, Brentwood, Essex, CM15 9TB, UK. The Publisher will ensure the widest possible dissemination of the journal and its contents.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts should be in English in double-spaced typing in the normal style of the journal on one side of A4 paper (30 cm ¥ 21 cm) with a wide margin on the left. All manuscripts accepted for publication are subject to any necessary editorial amendment. In addition, for Authors whose first language is not English, the Editor reserves the right to modify the text to improve its presentation. Author(s) should retain one copy of the text, tables and illustrations as the Editor cannot accept responsibility for damage to or loss of manuscripts.

The title page should contain the full title of the article, the names of all the authors and their affiliations, and a short running title. The author to whom correspondence should be sent should also be indicated together with Fax and E-Mail numbers, where appropriate.

The text should be preceded by an Abstract not exceeding 200 words and should be sub-divided into sections entitled Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References, etc. as appropriate. Pages, tables and figures should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. All tables and illustrations should be submitted individually on separate sheets and should bear a title or legend. A separate list of figure legends should also be included. The approximate position of such tables and illustrations in the text should be indicated at the appropriate point in the left-hand margin.

Units given in tables should appear in parentheses in column headings, but not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should, if necessary, be repeated on successive lines to avoid the use of the word 'ditto'. Greek symbols must be named in the margin of the text when first used. Line drawings should be of an appropriate size bearing in mind the need for approximately 50% reduction at the typesetting stage, and should be included separately as photocopies attached to the manuscript. Lettering on drawings should be of professional quality or generated by high-resolution computer graphics and should be large enough (10–12 points) to accommodate reduction to the extent indicated above. Photographs submitted should be high quality bromide prints of good contrast, preferably with a transparent overlay for protection. Where appropriate, magnifications should be given as a scale on the print. Each illustration should be labelled with the figure number and the author(s) name(s) in soft pencil on the back, with the top edge clearly identified.
References in the text should be given in full when first mentioned, e.g. (Roberts and McKee 1978). For references in the text with three of more authors, the name of the first author should be followed by et al. and the year of publication. References should be listed alphabetically on a separate sheet with journal titles abbreviated according to the convention adopted by Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index, 1970 edition and supplements, in the format:

de Boer, J.H. (1958) The Structure and Properties of Porous Materials, Everett, D.H., Stone, F.S., Eds, Academic Press, New York/London.

Note that the second and subsequent lines of references should be indented by 1 em. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references. Spelling should conform to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English. The journal employs SI units [see McGlashan, M.L. (1971) Physicochemical Quantities and Units (the Grammar and Spelling of Physical Chemistry), 2nd Edn, The Royal Society of Chemistry, London].

Submission of Manuscripts

It is important to note that, in order to speed up the process of assessment, the text and artwork of submitted manuscripts must be transmitted electronically. Only in special circumstances (see below) will manuscripts submitted as hard copies be considered for assessment. Electronic submission should be either via a computer diskette or as an E-mail attachment, in order to speed up the process of assessment. Electronic submissions sent by diskette should be incorporated in a 3.5 inch floppy disk labelled with the operating system and word processor program employed together with the authors’ names and manuscript title. Those sent as E-mail attachments should be sent either as binary or compressed files. All electronic submissions must be in PDF (Portable Document Format).

Authors without access to E-mail and Internet facilities may submit their manuscripts as hard copies by Air Mail. However, it should be noted that such submissions may be subject to delays both in assessment and possible ultimate acceptance.
